DIY Pet Collar Tassels

Tassels are all the rage in the fashion world this spring, so why not let your pup in on the fun? Today we're sharing a super easy, inexpensive Doggy DIY so you can make some adorable tassels for your fashion forward furball!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Small piece of cardboard

Step 1:

Cut a small piece of cardboard into a square. The length of one side of the square will be about the length of your tassel, so cut your square accordingly (I made mine about 4" long). Once cardboard is cut to the desired size, cut a 1/2" slit into one side of the cardboard, about 1/2" from the edge.

Step 2:

Pull the end of the yarn you will be using for your fringe through the slit you just cut in your cardboard square. This will secure it in place as you wrap the fringe around the board.

Step 3:

Wrap yard around the cardboard square until fringe reaches the desired thickness. Here, I used about 3 yards of yarn.

Step 4:

Cut a 4 inch piece of yarn and tie it to form a loop. Then, take this loop and slide it under the yarn you just wound, next to the cardboard, as seen in the image above.

Step 5:

Pull one end of the loop through the other, forming a slip not. Pull tight at the top edge of the cardboard.

Step 6:

Carefully use your snip your fringe along the bottom edge of your cardboard, or the edge opposite your slipknot.

Step 7:

Pull fringe free of cardboard. Cardboard can now either be recycled, or reused to make more tassels. You will then have a bundle of yarn that will look something like this.

Step 8:

Cut a 6" piece of yarn and wrap it around the fringe, as pictured above. Tie once and pull tight, then continue to wrap both ends tightly around the fringe in opposite directions, forming a bundle.

Step 9:

Tie off ends in a double knot, trim ends to length and tuck knot into wrapping if desired. You can also adjust the "bubble" of yarn at the top of the tassel so it looks a little neater. Then smooth out fringe and remove any tangles before trimming the ends so that they are all one length.

Tassel Ta-Da!

That's all there is to it! You now have an adorable tassel perfect for slipping over your pet's collar! These are awesome for adding a little extra flair on a special occasion, or an afternoon walk! We also love hanging ours off the handle of Ruby's leash for a fashionable touch!

Confession: These are amazing for more than just pets! You can also make them in different sizes to accessorize your own looks, or make an adorable garland for your next party! The possibilities are endless for these adorable little tassels!
