Reading With Ruby: The Art of Racing in the Rain

Happy Monday!
Rainy Pacific Northwest weekends call for coffee, cuddles, and a copy of one of our favorite books! Lately I have been reading a lot of local Seattle authors, and last weekend I picked up Garth Stein’sThe Art of Racing in the Rain on a recommendation. This 2008 New York Times Bestseller peaked my interest for one very specific reason, it is written from the point of view of a dog.

Now I know what you're thinking...
Really? A story told by a dog? I admit, I too was skeptical as the story sounds like every fourth grader's dream come true. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised to find that this book was not only mature, but incredibly well crafted. The author truly captures the spirit of the intricate relationship between dogs and their people, while providing a unique and uplifting perspective.

Enzo is the witty, intelligent, and utterly charming canine companion of race car driver Denny Swift, who narrates this tale of love, loss, and understanding as it plays out in the Central District of Seattle. Wise beyond his years or capacity, Enzo attempts to tackle and understand humanness, as well as his place in his small family as it grows and evolves through his short life here on Earth. Though he spends most of his days home alone watching television, or tapes of Denny’s races, we see in Enzo the intelligence and resilience of a dog who truly believes, as do the Mongolians, that in his next life he would be human. Through a series of ups and downs, we watch as this team of two learn to brave the storms and thrive while racing in the rain.

I have nothing but praise for Stein and this honest and moving novel. I was touched by the connection he was able to develop between Denny and Enzo, and found myself laughing and crying along with them for most of this short book. Though this paperback may not be the lightest in content, it is one that truly spoke to me in its relatability and truthful portrayal of the relationship between a dog and it’s human.

Dog Moms, if you’re looking for an easy weekend read that will tug at your heartstrings and speak to your soul, I would recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain every time!
