Buckeye, AZ: A Dog's Day in the Desert

Today we're dreaming of palm trees, cacti, and desert sunsets while we cuddle up under our heated blanket in our chilly Seattle apartment, so we figured it was the perfect time to recap our holiday visit to the Phoenix suburb of Buckeye, Arizona!

Located about 30 miles west of Phoenix on I-10 is the suburb of Buckeye, Arizona. My parents recently adopted the snowbird lifestyle, so we followed their flight path South for a few weeks to help shake off the frost over the holidays!  We spent most of our time in the planned community of Verrado, which opened in 2002 and features over a hundred parks, community pools, gold courses, clubhouses and a darling downtown with several awesome restaurants. The best part? The neighborhood is incredibly dog friendly! So here are a few of the highlights of our trip.

Verrado Coffee Co.
This adorable little dog-friendly coffee house sits right at the entry to Verrado neighborhood and is housed in the same building as the information center for the community. With it's bold mural wall, you can't miss it! If you're new to the area, this stop is a must for all of your caffeine and culture needs. There's plenty of cozy seating inside if you visit sans-pup, or opt for a seat outside on the patio for you and your canine companion! There's plenty of shade and water bowls to go around! We were impressed when we tried an iced coffee with coconut milk, a cold brew coffee and the best raspberry white chocolate scone!

Neighborhood Dog Park
After a few sips of coffee we grabbed our cups and made a quick cut through the parking lot to the neighborhood dog park! Coffee and puppy park in the same parking lot? We're in heaven! The park was by no mean sprawling, but it was divided into large and small dog areas which were both very clean. Each had nice grass and dirt play areas, and there was some great seating for puppy parents. Ruby enjoyed some play time with the local pack while we chatted and finished our beverages. I think it's safe to say a good time was had by all!

Verrado's Temporary Trails
This desert community is adjacent to the 30,000 acre White Tank Mountain Regional Park and features nearly 21 miles of trails and paths with difficulties for all skill levels. We were lucky enough to have spent the afternoon hiking a few of them, and you can read about it in our Trail Guide: Verrado's Temporary Trails.

What did we do with the rest of our trip? Well, we enjoyed some much needed down time. I spent a lot of time by the pool, exploring the trails, catching up on Netflix, and of course working on some awesome new projects for Ruby On Alki! Ruby spent her first vacation napping in as many laps as possible, going on long walks with her grandma, and gorging herself of endless amounts of leftovers dropped to her by my gullible family members.

All and all, it was a great trip, and now that we're home
we're looking forward to our next big adventure!
