Barking At The Bachelor: Season 21, Episode 1

It's a new year and you know what that means...
A new season of The Bachelor!

Here at Ruby On Alki we are big fans of the show, so we thought we would start a little blog series recapping the events on each weekly episode! So make sure to SUBSCRIBE or check back here on Tuesdays all season long for this dog mom's analysis of the drama.

Without further ado, we present...
Barking At The Bachelor!

Hope you're ready Bachelor Nation,
Because the season premier of The Bachelor's "Most Shocking Season Yet" was definitely an interesting one. We just finished watching the show here on the West Coast (Best Coast), so with an empty glass of chardonnay at my right and a very tired Ruby dog on my left, I'm sharing my thoughts on the ever interesting Nick Viall and his gaggle of girlfriends.

First, let's talk about our Bachelor.
Nick, the 36-year-old chronic runner-up, is back on his FOURTH "journey to find love", but unlike his first three attempts (two seasons of The Bachelorette and a season of The Bachelor In Paradise) he's in charge. He's been the bad boy, he's been the sweet guy, but he's never been the winner. My opinion? He's here for the #WrongReasons, if he does another show he probably doesn't ever have to go back to his job in software sales. He's also not really a dog person... So that's just really shady. But who knows? Maybe in addition to his swanky new wardrobe he'll get a girlfriend out of the deal.

Now, on to the ladies.
I don't want to bore you with their corny life stories and made up careers, I'm just going to hit the high points.

  • Alexis - Billed as an "Aspiring Dolphin Trainer" and showed up in a shark costume and stilettos. She's the token weird girl, and while I don't see her winning Nick's heart, we're all hoping that Seaworld will give her her big break.
  • Angela - The only thing I remember about this girl is that she wanted to touch Nick's hair... NEXT!
  • Astrid - Terrible name, but the fact that she's fluent in German almost makes up for it... Right?
  • Briana - The first of a few nurses this season. She tried to do a cute intro where she listened to Nick's heart, but it must not have been that sweet since it got almost completely cut out of the episode...
  • Brittany - Another nurse who fell flat on her intro, but this one asked him to bend over before she got cut off.
  • Christen - Baby-faced and cute, she wore canary yellow (YIKES) and tried to teach nick to dance. Not bad, sister.
  • Corinne - Where do I start? How about I first tell you that she lives with her parents and still has a Nanny at 24? Or maybe that she gave Nick a bag of tokens he could exchange for favors... Whatever, she seems slightly crazy, which was confirmed when she lands the first kiss of the season tried to make it a make out session.
  • Danielle L. - That dress stole the show. STUNNING. Plus no corny bit, just a sweet introduction and a hug. I like her.
  • Danielle M. - She's an NICU nurse and seems nice enough, but I'm pretty sure shes just a highly educated clone of last season's Bachelor winner, Lauren B.
  • Dominique - I actually don't even remember seeing her... NEXT!
  • Liz - Apparently, Liz and Nick hooked up a few months back at a Bachelor Alumni wedding, so depending on how well that went, she's coming in with a leg up. I'm pretty sure she's being paid to make an appearance and stir up some drama in the Mansion. Too bad we can already tell that Nick isn't interested.
  • Elizabeth - Extremely forgettable save for her fabulous dress.
  • Hailey - "Do you know what a girl wearing underwear says?" Actually I do, she's telling you to GTFO.
  • Ida Marie - She's adorable, she dresses well, she's sweet, and she probably won't make it through the first 4 episodes. However if she needs a new best friend, she should hit us up.
  • Jaimi - This girl has BALLS! Literally. She has a septum piercing and ex-girlfriend issues, but she promises to be good for some drama.
  • Jasmin B. / Jasmin G. - I remember nothing about either of these girls... Why does everyon have the same name?
  • Josephine - FINALLY. A pet mom. We'll forgive her for the cats, because dogs also made an appearance. Automatic thumbs up from Ruby and I.
  • Kristina - Nobody told us a Kardashian would be making an appearance! Just kidding, but seriously if it doesn't work out for her here, she could easily make a home on KUWTK.
  • Lacey - Girlfriend had, hands down, the best entrance of the night when she rode in on a camel and slid down into Nick's arms. That was all we saw of her this episode, but hey, she did nail it.
  • Lauren - I'm really just thankful there's only one Lauren in the mix this season.
  • Michelle - So corny... NEXT!
  • Olivia - Came in strong with Eskimo kisses and a fur coat. This Alaska native is a contender for sure.
  • Rachel - Smart, sophisticated, almost funny, this lawyer stole the show and won herself the First Impression Rose! We can already tell she's the one to beat.
  • Raven - The sweet Southern Belle who could definitely hook you up with a great game day outfit, however she wasn't super interesting.
  • Sarah - She won my heart by yelling "Oh my gosh there's FOOD!" as soon as she entered the mansion.
  • Susannah - Ummm... Beard massage? That's odd.
  • Taylor - Our hometown Bachelorette! This Seattlite (with an awesome name) made it very clear that she was signed up for the show by her friends, and in doing so she already stuck her foot in her mouth... TWICE.
  • Vanessa - I'm just impressed that they found a female version of Daniel, from JoJo's season of The Bachelorette. Worst case scenario she gets the boot and those two ride off into the sunset.
  • Whitney - Another girl I don't remember at all. Come on producers, you can do better than that.

Front Runners:
Rachel is the obvious front runner in this episode as she scooped up the First Impression Rose. Despite her crazy, Corinne seems to have a solid footing at the top as well. Vanessa also seems to have caught Nick's eye, and they showed her quite a bit, so we predict she'll stick around.

Losing Ladies:
Angela, Briana, Jasmine B., Ida Marie, Lauren, Michelle, Olivia, and Susannah all got the boot this episode, leaving Nick with just 22 blossoming relationships to pursue.

Our Final Thoughts:
The Bachelor producers were a little conservative in their picks this year. So with only a couple really outspoken ladies on board, and a Bachelor who is still trying to win the hearts of America, I'm slightly concerned this season might fall flat. However, Ruby and I have hope that Corinne and Hailey will manage to stir up some drama for all those dog mommas out there watching!

That's all for now Bachelor Nation! I'm hitting the hay. Be sure to hit SUBSCRIBE and check back next week for the next exciting installment of Barking At The Bachelor!

  7. I love this! I did Bachelorette recaps during Jojo's season and was thinking about bringing them back for Nick's season... but I can't stand him! I'm interested to see where this season goes. I agree that it might fall flat.

  9. I'm not watching this season due to my schedule (since the show is so long if it's a season where I can't watch live on Mondays- I don't watch! lol), but sounds like it will be full of drama as always! I liked Nick on Andi's season but didn't like him with Kaitlyn

    1. It's so hard when you can't watch live! But I know you can usually steam on ABC's website the next day :) I just don't know how to feel about Nick. I never really liked him, but I'm trying to be open minded!

  14. Yeah, I feel like a decent amount of ladies are there for the wrong reasons. Also, Corrine... she just seems like the type that always got what she wanted from her parents and didn't have to work for anything. I also doubt she does much for her family biz

    1. I honestly feel like she's just her dad's secretary... But hey, whatever! She should be good for some drama, which we might need since I felt like half of the group was just really boring...

  15. How are we defining "fall flat"? Like no love story or no drama? I have a post coming out on friday with all my thoughts and I am thinking this season is going to be amazing! But I also love Nick so I am biased lol

    1. Hey Rachel! I'm worried there will be neither! I love the show but it seems like they're trying SO HARD to sell Nick as a nice guy that they got all these boring people so he can't be mean to them... I'm so hoping next week they prove me wrong!

  16. I have never been a die hard fan of The Bachelor/ Bachelorette but always love to watch the first episodes! I am so not loving Nick, definitely agree he is not really there for the right reasons!

    1. I know he so does! But I'm worried he's setting our expectations wayyyy too high on this one! I have a strong suspicion that Nick is only in it for the fame... but who knows. I'm trying not to call it yet!

  20. I love Nick but I am not a super huge fan of most of the women on the show! We will see if I find someone I really like in the next episode:)
